Jazz photographer Herman Leonard has passed away. Leonard is  considered to be one of the great midcentury jazz-scene photographers,  capturing Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Frank Sinatra,  Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis during their heyday. The Smithsonian  Institution has 130 of Leonard's photos in its permanent collection. He  lived in New Orleans until Hurricane Katrina flooded his home,  destroying thousands of his prints. After the hurricane, 
Leonard  relocated to Los Angeles.
He was 87.
