This year’s Festival pays tribute to the legendary Curtis Mayfield; celebrates the legacy of Fela Kuti with the sounds of Roy Ayers; takes a cultural journey to Brazil through the voice of Latin Grammy Award-winning composer, Ivan Lins; commemorates 40 years of excellence in dance with PHILADANCO; embarks on a journey to a bygone era with the Oscar Micheaux silent film Body and Soul accompanied live by Wycliffe Gordon, and an evening at “Stormy’s Supper Club” at the NBAF Gala; and there is so much more in store for the entire family! Join NBAF at Centennial Olympic Park, July 15 – 18, as we kickoff our annual summer festival with Brazil Fest at the National Black Arts Festival presented in partnership with the Brazilian Consulate in Atlanta and the Brazilian Government. World famous, Afro-Brazilian percussion group Olodum and celebrated Brazilian composer Ivan Lins headline the Brazil Fest Concert on Thursday, July 15th at Atlanta Symphony Hall. Not to mention, our highly-anticipated International Marketplace returns to Centennial Olympic Park with over 100 artisans from around the world showcasing the best in fine art, clothing, jewelry and crafts. Centennial Olympic Park is sure to be buzzing with excitement with an all-star lineup on the World Music Stage. Musical performances include Atlanta’s own, DJ Kemit from the popular Spread Love series on Friday; funk and jazz extraordinaire Roy Ayers performs the music of Fela Kuti with Common Ground Collective on Saturday; and songstress Lizz Wright graces our stage with for closing performance on Sunday. Jazz Trombonist, Wycliffe Gordon revives the lost art of live silent film accompaniment as he and a 16-piece big band performs his original score to Oscar Micheaux’s 1925 film, Body and Soul on Wednesday, July 14 at Georgia State’s Rialto Center for the Arts. Gordon provides a rich musical tapestry for the film which not only highlights his talent as a composer and performer, but also contextualizes Micheaux’s genius as a filmmaker. Recognized as one of the most prolific and innovative African American filmmakers of the early 20 century, Micheaux’s image is celebrated by the United States Postal Service as the 33 commemorative stamp in the Black heritage series. ththrd This year’s Legends Celebration honors the music and legacy of Curtis Mayfield with a dynamic performance entitled, To Curtis with Love, on July 16th at Atlanta Symphony Hall. Mayfield’s music continues to inspire audiences, influence artists ten years after his death.

PHILADANCO celebrates 40 years of excellence with two performances, July 15 and July 17, at Georgia State’s Rialto Center for the Arts. Audiences will experiencethth performances described as, “…Exuberant…” by The New York Times. PHILADANCO will perform By Way of the Funk, a new work set to the music of George Clinton, the funkiest man on the planet; and choreographed by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, founder of the Urban Bush Women Dance Company. In addition, local dancers are invited to participate in a Community Dance Class with PHILADANCO on Friday, July 16th at Ballethnic Dance Studios. Pre-registration is required for the dance class and space is reserved on a first-come-first-served basis. Since its inception, NBAF’s Children’s Education Village has delighted and engaged thousands of children, and their families, in the history and culture of Africa and the African Diaspora. Children and adults are invited to participate in More Than Words, a variety of interactive experiences based on the 12 core themes which are derived from the speeches and writings of and about Dr. Martin Luther King. The themes are peace, justice, freedom, civil rights, nonviolence, love, courage, equality, truth, protest, growth and dream. The Village also includes a variety of live performances. Bring your lunch and plan to spend the day at NBAF’s Children’s Education Village. Pre-registration is required for camps and groups only on Friday, July 16th. Families can attend the Village free on Saturday, July 17th and Sunday, July 18th. Guests are invited to walk the red carpet as NBAF presents the 2010 Gala: A Gathering of Colors, the organization’s largest fundraising event, is presented each year during the National Black Arts Festival. This year’s gala invites guests to return to a bygone era when women were glamorous and men were cool cats and the music was stompin’, as they step in to NBAF’s “Stormy's Supper Club” in the Grand Atrium of the beautifully renovated 200 Peachtree on Saturday, July 17th. The Gala features performances by Joe Gransden and his 16-piece Big Band, Jasmine Guy, Avery Sharpe and much more; with Special Guest Host and Honorary Gala Chair, Lynn Whitfield. Sure to be the talk of the town, this annual fundraiser helps NBAF to raise funds for year-round programming and operations. As NBAF re-imagines its role as one of the nation’s pre-eminent presenters of the arts and culture of the African Diaspora; a new visual identity is emerging. ABOUT NBAF’S EDUCATION AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS NBAF’s year-round Education and Public Programs are structured to provide children, families, educators and the general public with the means to explore and understand the history and cultures of Africa and the African Diaspora.
