The Heinz Endowments and The Pittsburgh Foundation have jointly launched a $650,000 initiative to ensure continuing support for local organizations and individuals whose work focuses primarily on the art of African-Americans.
"Advancing Black Art in Pittsburgh," established with an initial $325,000 from each foundation, will be officially announced to local arts organizations at Homewood Library today.
Applications made by organizations to The Pittsburgh Foundation, which will process funding requests, will be reviewed by a panel that will include artists, curators, community representatives and staff from both foundations. Grants will be awarded biannually beginning in the spring of 2011.
Earlier this year The Heinz Endowments and The Pittsburgh Foundation announced that they were beginning to withdraw from funding the Multi-Cultural Arts Initiative in order to offer direct support to arts organizations. The new initiative is intended to continue MCAI's legacy.
The foundation presidents said they expect the initiative to evolve to include the support of other regional funding organizations and individual donors in order to increase grantmaking resources for black arts groups.
