Does Lionsgate smell an Oscar nomination (or two) for Tyler Perry?
Variety reports that the studio has moved the release date of Perry's latest film, 'For Colored Girls,' from Jan. 2011, to Nov. 5, 2010. The film was originally slated to debut over Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend, though Lionsgate is now pushing for awards consideration.
The film is based on 'For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf,' a 1975 stage play by Ntozake Shange. The 1977 Broadway production received a Tony nomination for Best Play.
The play is a collection of 20 poems, performed by seven women characters, each identified only by the color of their costume ('Lady in Yellow,' 'Lady in Purple,' etc.). The poems deal with love, abandonment, rape, abortion and, ultimately, redemption.
Perry's film adaptation stars Janet Jackson, Thandie Newton, Whoopie Goldberg and Kerry Washington.
All of Tyler Perry's films have been commercially successful, though few have received critical acclaim -- the auteur is now set to prove himself as a true filmmaker with such dark and emotional material.
Perry's latest film, 'Why Did I Get Married Too?', opened Apr. 2, 2010 and earned over $60 million in domestic box office.
