African-American photographers raise funds for Haiti

The Portfolio Art Gallery and Education Center will be the site of an upcoming fundraiser for victims of the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti.

On June 25 and 26, the gallery will host an exhibit of images taken by local African-American photographers. All donations – $20 on the 25th and $10 on the 26th – in addition to a portion of all sales, will go to the Salvation Army's Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund.

"This fundraiser will be a unique and exciting three-way partnership between Portfolio, the Salvation Army and seven local African-American photographers," said Marilyn Robinson, whose photos will be included in the exhibit. She also serves as director of the St. Louis County Department of Human Services.

Robinson said she presented the idea for the exhibit to Robert Powell, executive director of Portfolio. She said African-Americans feel a special, cultural connection to the people of Haiti. The exhibit provides a way for the photographers involved to use their skills to help with the Haiti recovery effort.

Besides Robinson, participating photographers are Carl Bruce, Roscoe Crenshaw, Maurice Meredith, Wiley Price, Anita Santiago and Deloris Stith Rutlin.
